Fully Funded Internships at Max Planck Institutes in Computer Science in Germany 2026

Scholarships for International

The Max Planck Institutes for Computer Science in Germany (the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems in Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern, and the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy in Bochum) offer fully funded internships at Max Planck Institutes in all areas of computer science. These internships are open to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral students from around the world, as well as outstanding professionals from industry interested in gaining academic research experience.

These internships provide an opportunity to work on world-class research and are an ideal gateway to exploring new research areas. They often result in co-authored publications in leading scientific conferences.

Program Details

Duration: Typically 12–14 weeks, with the possibility of extension.
Funding: All internships are fully funded and include:
- Monthly living allowance.
- Accommodation costs covered.
- Round-trip travel expenses from the country of residence to the hosting institute.
Working Language: English (no requirement to know German).
Supervision: Each intern works directly with an academic supervisor (faculty member) at one of the participating institutes.
Nature of Projects: Determined based on the intern’s interests and experience after acceptance.

Application Deadlines

For internships starting between May and August: Apply by November 1 of the previous year. Successful applicants will be notified before March 1.
For other times of the year: Apply at least 5 months before the desired start date. Applicants are notified within 3–4 months.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to applicants who meet the following requirements:

Be a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral student, or an industry professional interested in academic research.
Have a strong background in computer science or a related field (equivalent to the first three years of a bachelor’s degree in computer science).
Hold an excellent academic record, regardless of its length.
Bachelor’s or Master’s students may use the internship as a thesis project if their university permits.
Applicants from diverse academic backgrounds or with interdisciplinary interests are welcome.
Special encouragement for applicants from underrepresented groups in computer science or other STEM fields.
