The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) in Braunschweig, Germany, has announced the call for applications for the Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship 2027, dedicated to Education for Sustainable Peace.

The fellowship aims to promote education for sustainable peace, with a particular focus on curricula and educational media at the secondary school level in post-conflict or transitional societies.

Objectives of the Fellowship

The fellowship seeks to achieve several key goals, including:

  • Bridging the gap between theory and practice in the field of peace education.
  • Fostering international academic exchange among scholars and practitioners.
  • Transforming research findings into practical recommendations for professionals working in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

The fellowship holder’s work is expected to result in policy papers, educational materials, research studies, or comprehensive academic publications.

Duration and Location

The fellowship includes a six-month research stay at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) in Braunschweig, Germany.
It offers the fellow the opportunity to conduct a research or practice-oriented project in the field of education for sustainable peace, preferably with a focus on educational media, and to discuss their work with scholars and practitioners within the GEI network.

Funding and Benefits

The fellowship provides financial and logistical support that includes:

  • A monthly stipend of €3,300 for six months (with the possibility of a shorter period of at least three months in exceptional cases).
  • A round-trip economy airfare to Germany.
  • Administrative and logistical assistance from the program coordinators, including support with administrative matters and the publication of research outcomes.

The fellow is required to obtain a passport and visa (if necessary) and arrange health insurance covering the duration of the stay in Germany.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are welcome from outstanding researchers in the fields of humanities, political and social sciences, education, or law, who propose a project clearly situated within the field of peace education.

The fellowship also welcomes distinguished practitioners in peace education who possess substantial international experience in fields such as journalism, government, or NGO management.

General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Demonstrated exceptional academic or professional achievements in their field.
  • A combination of academic excellence and practical field experience.
  • At least five years of advanced professional experience in peace education.
  • Proof that their previous work or projects have had a significant impact in the field.
  • Excellent command of the English language.

Obligations of the Senior Fellow

During the fellowship period, the Senior Fellow is expected to:

  • Conduct a research or practice-based project in the field of education for sustainable peace, preferably focusing on educational media and curriculum development in transitional societies.
  • Contribute to the conceptual design of the program’s annual conference in collaboration with the Georg Arnhold Program coordinator.
  • Present their research project at a GEI research colloquium.
  • Reside in Germany for the full duration of the fellowship and participate in the institute’s daily activities.
  • Publish the project results within one year after the fellowship concludes.

Application and Selection Procedure

The application and selection process consists of five main stages:

1. Online Application

Applicants must complete the online application form and attach a project summary of up to 1,000 words, following the guiding questions provided in the form.

2. Pre-selection at GEI

An academic committee at the GEI will conduct an initial review of eligible applications and projects. Up to ten applications will be forwarded to the Academic Advisory Board.

3. Shortlisting

The Academic Advisory Board of the Georg Arnhold Program will shortlist three top candidates for the final stage.

4. Submission of Full Proposal

The three shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a detailed project proposal (maximum 25 pages), along with a short CV and a list of publications, via email.
The proposal should include evidence of practical impact in peace education (e.g., frequently cited publications, project websites, success stories, etc.).

5. Final Selection

The shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview with the Academic Advisory Board during its annual meeting.
The final fellow will be selected following these interviews.

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will evaluate applications based on:

  • The quality and significance of the proposed project.
  • The applicant’s expertise and excellence, whether academic or professional, in peace education.
  • The degree of innovation and practical impact demonstrated in the applicant’s work or research.
