TheMaxwell King PhD Scholarship (MKS)is one of the most prestigious scholarships offered byMonash Universityin Australia. The scholarship was named in honor ofProfessor Maxwell Kingin recognition of his outstanding contributions to graduate research at the university, including eight years as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training).

Scholarship Details

  • Location: Monash University, Australia.
  • Annual value:AUD 52,352 (2025 rate).
  • Number of scholarships offered per year:Only two.
    • One in theHumanities and Social Sciences (HASS)disciplines.
    • One in theScience, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)disciplines.
  • Duration:Covers the entire PhD study period, according to the university’s conditions.
  • Application deadline:October 31 each year.

Recipients of the scholarship will receive:

  • Aliving allowance (stipend)to cover daily living costs.
  • Aresearch allowanceto support research activities.
  • Arelocation allowance, if eligible.

Eligibility Criteria

You may apply if you are:

  • AnAustralian citizen.
  • ANew Zealand citizen.
  • AnAustralian permanent resident.
  • AnAustralian humanitarian visa holder.
  • Aninternational student.

  • Submit a scholarship application within the current year.
  • Meet Monash’s competitive scholarship selection process requirements.
  • MeetMonash English language proficiency requirements.
  • Students enrolled inJoint Research Awardsare also eligible, provided Monash University is the home institution.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded based on:

  • Academic excellence.
  • Previous research outputs.
  • Prior research experience.

How to Apply

  • Graduate research scholarship applications are submittedat the same time as your PhD course application, via themyApp Portal.
  • Whether you are anew applicantor acurrently enrolled student, the same portal is used for both admission and scholarship applications.
  • You donotneed to select a specific scholarship—eligible applicants are automatically considered for all available graduate research scholarships.
  • Note:The MKS is awardedonly in the October 31 round. Applicants from earlier rounds (1–4 of the same year) will automatically be considered for nomination by the relevant faculty.
  • If you are anew applicant, you must first receive aninvitation to apply from the relevant facultybefore starting your application.
