The Maxwell King PhD Scholarship (MKS) is one of the most prestigious scholarships offered by Monash University in Australia. The scholarship was named in honor of Professor Maxwell King in recognition of his outstanding contributions to graduate research at the university, including eight years as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training).

Scholarship Details

  • Location: Monash University, Australia.
  • Annual value: AUD 52,352 (2025 rate).
  • Number of scholarships offered per year: Only two.
    • One in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) disciplines.
    • One in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
  • Duration: Covers the entire PhD study period, according to the university’s conditions.
  • Application deadline: October 31 each year.

Recipients of the scholarship will receive:

  • A living allowance (stipend) to cover daily living costs.
  • A research allowance to support research activities.
  • A relocation allowance, if eligible.

Eligibility Criteria

You may apply if you are:

  • An Australian citizen.
  • A New Zealand citizen.
  • An Australian permanent resident.
  • An Australian humanitarian visa holder.
  • An international student.

Additional requirements:

  • Submit a scholarship application within the current year.
  • Meet Monash’s competitive scholarship selection process requirements.
  • Meet Monash English language proficiency requirements.
  • Students enrolled in Joint Research Awards are also eligible, provided Monash University is the home institution.

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded based on:

  • Academic excellence.
  • Previous research outputs.
  • Prior research experience.

The standard RTP Scholarships terms and conditions apply, with some exceptions outlined in the specific eligibility criteria for the MKS.

How to Apply

  • Graduate research scholarship applications are submitted at the same time as your PhD course application, via the myApp Portal.
  • Whether you are a new applicant or a currently enrolled student, the same portal is used for both admission and scholarship applications.
  • You do not need to select a specific scholarship—eligible applicants are automatically considered for all available graduate research scholarships.
  • Note: The MKS is awarded only in the October 31 round. Applicants from earlier rounds (1–4 of the same year) will automatically be considered for nomination by the relevant faculty.
  • If you are a new applicant, you must first receive an invitation to apply from the relevant faculty before starting your application.
