The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme in International Humanitarian Action (NOHA) is one of the most prominent international master’s programs specialized in humanitarian action. It is a joint program between a number of European universities, offering high-quality academic education alongside practical training to prepare qualified professionals for work in humanitarian fields around the world.

The NOHA Erasmus Mundus Scholarship was established in 1993 with the support of the European Commission, and it was the first master’s program in the field of humanitarian studies. In 2025, it was once again selected as one of the Erasmus Mundus programs that provide fully funded scholarships.

About the NOHA Program

The program aims to prepare professional cadres capable of working in various aspects of humanitarian action. It is distinguished by its integration of deep theoretical knowledge and applied practical training. It is taught by more than 150 experts and lecturers with field experience.

More than 3500 graduates currently work in international humanitarian organizations and relief agencies around the world.

The program is multidisciplinary, multicultural, and multilingual.

It focuses on building capacities to deal with global humanitarian crises and providing sustainable and effective assistance.

Information about the Degree and the Program's Academic Background

The NOHA program is designed for people working or wishing to work in the humanitarian field, regardless of nationality, religion, race, or age.

The program began in 1993 as a result of cooperation between NOHA universities and the European Union's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and European educational institutions.

The most prominent feature of this program is the compulsory academic mobility, where students study at more than one university and in different countries to benefit from cultural, knowledge, and linguistic exchange.

Student admission is approved after a rigorous, competitive selection process at the university network level.

Note: Those who have previously received an EMJM scholarship cannot apply for this scholarship.

Who Can Apply for the NOHA Program?

The program is intended for people who work or intend to work in the humanitarian field.

Applicants are selected based on:

  • The quality of academic qualifications.
  • Professional experience or interest in humanitarian work
  • Cultural and linguistic awareness.
  • Personal motivation and interest in humanitarian issues.

Admission Conditions and Academic Requirements

  • University Degree
  • Must hold a Bachelor's degree (minimum 180 ECTS) in a field related to humanitarian work, such as: (Medical Sciences, Food Sciences, Economics and Management, Engineering, Law, Social Sciences, Education, Humanities).

Language Requirements

English (required for all universities except in specific cases):

TOEFL iBT: minimum 93 (Writing ≥ 24, and no section below 20)

IELTS: minimum 6.5 (and no section below 6.0)

CAE C1 or CPE C2

Exemption from the English test in the following cases:

  • Native English speakers.
  • Completed entire university studies in English with an official document proving it.

Spanish Language

For students at the University of Deusto in the first semester: B2 level or a personal interview.

French Language

For students at Aix Marseille University: C1 level.

Academic Mobility Requirements

All students must study in at least two different countries, one of which must be a European Union member state. Mobility cannot be replaced by virtual learning.

Application Steps

Application is only through the online application form with uploading the required documents:

  • Copy of passport
  • Graduation certificate + translation (if not in English)
  • Academic transcript + translation (if not in English)
  • Certificate of enrollment or graduation (if the applicant has not received the diploma yet)
  • CV in English (Europass preferred)
  • Proof of language level (according to the university)
  • Two recommendation letters (recent date, not from relatives
  • Proof of residence during the last 12 months
  • Any research publications, if available

Application Deadlines

Opening of applications for the 2026–2028 cohort: October 1, 2025

Final deadline for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship: December 15, 2025

Selection Process

  • Applications are evaluated by a joint committee from all universities
  • Accepted applicants are notified by email.
  • Applicants can appeal within 7 days of receiving the decision.
