Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the PhD program at the Vienna Biocentre, you must meet the following requirements:

Master's Degree or Equivalent: You must have a master's degree or its equivalent in a life sciences-related subject from a two-year study program with 120 ECTS credits (or expect to obtain it before June 1, 2025).
Research Experience: Experience in a relevant scientific field is required (at least 6 months of full-time research experience is recommended).
Complete Application Form: You must submit a fully completed application form before the specified deadline, including references provided by reviewers.
Details of Two Referees: Provide complete details of two referees, including their institutional email addresses. One of them should have supervised you on a research project.
High Level of English Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English is required (a formal certificate is not needed).

Applicants with a Non-European Master’s Degree

Applicants holding a master's degree or equivalent from a non-European university will be required to provide their GPA scores.

Applicants with a Master’s Equivalent Degree

You must have a four-year bachelor's degree (BA or BSc) with first-class honors and 240 ECTS credits in a life sciences-related subject.
Degree certificates and academic transcripts must be submitted with the application.

Tuition Fees for PhD Studies in Austria 2025

Citizens from EU/EEA Countries

Students from EU/EEA countries are exempt from tuition fees for the minimum duration of the program plus two additional semesters (8 semesters for PhD programs). Therefore, during the first eight semesters, you only need to pay the student union fee (amounting to €24.70). After the eight semesters, you will need to pay the tuition fee (€363.36) in addition to the student union fee.

Fees must be paid each semester, at the latest by the end of the extended registration period (March 31/October 31). Tuition fees and student union fees must be paid in full during the registration period. Failure to do so will result in the acceptance or cancellation of student registration.

The necessary payment data for student contributions will be provided in their accounts on MedCampus. Fees can also be paid directly at the Office of Studies and Examinations using a debit card (Maestro).

Citizens from Non-EU/EEA Countries

Students from non-EU/EEA countries are required to pay €726.72 in tuition fees plus the student union fee each semester. Most PhD students at the Vienna Biocentre can apply for "equivalence with EU/EEA citizens," provided they have a researcher visa.

Competitive Salaries: The salaries offered to our students are competitive compared to other PhD programs in Europe, ranging from €34,200 to €37,950 (gross) annually (based on 2023 figures), depending on the institute you join, and are subject to taxes.
Affordable Living Costs: Vienna is not an expensive city to live in. Students can live comfortably, with many even managing to save money during their time at the Vienna Biocentre.
Health/Retirement/Accident/Unemployment Insurance: Comprehensive coverage including health, retirement, accident, and unemployment insurance.
Reimbursement of Registration Fees at the University of Vienna: Study fees at the University of Vienna will be reimbursed.
Visa Expenses: The Human Resources department at the respective institutes will assist you in obtaining your visa in time before your start date. Costs for residence permits for newcomers are usually reimbursed.
Language Courses: Institutes offer German language courses (depending on the institute) during your stay in Vienna. While English is the working language of the program, knowing some German can help you settle into the city and familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

Application for the PhD Program at the Vienna Biocentre 2025

At the Vienna Biocentre, they seek applicants who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about developing competitive projects at the forefront of modern biology. The center hires about 25-30 candidates per call, receiving approximately 2,000 applications annually.

Online Application Form

The online application form consists of the following parts:

Part 1: You will be asked for your personal information and details for 2-3 referees. After submitting this information, you will receive an email with a link to complete Part 2 of the application.
Part 2: This part includes questions about your education, research experience, and research interests. Using the provided link, you can save and edit your information as many times as needed until you click "Submit." Please note that you should download a PDF copy of your application under "PDF Summary" before submitting it, as you will not have access to your application after submission.

Applications will be reviewed online by the faculty, and the best candidates will be selected. If there is something that needs clarification, they may contact you via Zoom. Approximately 100 candidates are typically invited for interviews.

Does the VBC program have specific language requirements?

The language used in the program is English at all times, so proficiency in English is required. While it is recommended to provide official proof of English proficiency (such as IELTS, CPE, or TOEFL), it is not mandatory.

Can I upload my academic transcripts?

Yes, you can upload your academic transcripts. If the transcripts are not translated into English, please provide a translation.

My university uses a percentage system instead of grades or points. What should I indicate?

In this case, please indicate the percentage you obtained and the percentage required to pass.

Can I replace one of my referees with another?

You can replace one of your referees with another. Please send all required information (title, last name, first name, university, department, street, postal code, city, work phone number, email) regarding the new referee to the program coordinator. Clearly specify which referee needs to be replaced.

Note: In the final week of the application process, it is no longer possible to replace or add referees.
