Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in China offers one of the most significant support programs dedicated to international students through the President Scholarship of NPU, which targets various academic levels and includes multi-tier financial waivers. This program aims to attract academically outstanding students and provide a supportive learning environment across all majors available to international applicants.

Scholarship Levels and Benefits

The NPU President Scholarship is divided into three levels, each offering a different amount of financial support:

First Level

Recipients of the First Level receive:

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Full accommodation fee waiver
  • Monthly living allowance for 12 months according to academic level:

    • Undergraduate: 1500 RMB/month
    • Master’s: 2000 RMB/month
    • PhD: 3500 RMB/month

Second Level

  • Full tuition fee waiver only

Third Level

Applicants may apply to all majors available to international students at NPU without exception. All academic programs are open for competition according to the university’s admission standards.

General Eligibility Requirements

The university sets several criteria that applicants must meet:

1. Health Condition

  • Good physical and mental health
  • No infectious diseases or conditions that prevent regular study

2. Academic Qualifications & Age

Bachelor’s Degree:

  • High school certificate
  • Under 23 years old before 1 September 2026

Master’s Degree:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Under 30 years old before 1 September 2026

PhD Degree:

  • Master’s degree
  • Under 35 years old before 1 September 2026

3. Academic Performance

  • Good learning ability and strong academic record
  • Previous GPA of 75% or above
  • For undergraduate applicants: CSCA test result required

4. Language Requirements

Applicants must meet English or Chinese language requirements based on each program’s criteria.

5. Nationality Requirement

  • Applicant must be a non-Chinese citizen

For applicants who were once Chinese citizens and later acquired another nationality:

  • Must hold the new passport for at least 4 years
  • Must have lived outside China for at least 2 years within the last 4 years

6. Special Cases Regarding Parents’ Nationality

If one or both parents are Chinese citizens, the applicant must provide one of the following:

  • Proof of acquiring foreign nationality at birth
  • Certificate of renunciation of Chinese nationality (for previous Chinese citizens)

First: Bachelor’s Programs for International Students under NPU Scholarship 2026

Duration & Degree

  • Duration: 4 years
  • Degree awarded: Bachelor’s

Application Timeline

  • First Round: 1 November 2025 – 15 January 2026
  • Second Round: 16 January – 15 March 2026
  • Third Round: 16 March – 15 April 2026
  • Fourth Round: 20 April – 20 May 2026

Note: When the quota is full, applications close automatically. Enrollment is for the September intake only.

Eligibility for Bachelor’s Applicants

  • Good physical and mental health
  • Under 23 years old before 1 September 2026
  • High school certificate obtained before 1 September 2026
  • Strong academic performance (75% or above), acceptance of SAT / A-Level / IB, etc.
  • CSCA test result required before 20 May 2026 (with test subjects depending on the major and language)

Language Requirements:

For Chinese-taught programs:

  • HSK 5 with a score of 180+

For English-taught programs:

  • IELTS 6.0
  • TOEFL 80
  • Duolingo 115
  • Cambridge FCE 169 / CAE 180 / CPE

Applicants who do not meet language requirements may take a foundation year.

Nationality Requirements:

  • Must be non-Chinese with a valid passport.
  • For former Chinese citizens: proof of acquiring foreign nationality before 30 April 2022 and evidence of 2 years of actual residence abroad since that date.
  • If one parent is Chinese: additional documents proving foreign nationality since birth or renunciation of Chinese nationality.

  • CSCA result or commitment letter regarding test date

Application Process

  • Prepare all required documents.
  • Create an account on the application portal: admission.nwpu.edu.cn
  • Pay the application fee: 600 RMB / 90 USD (non-refundable).
  • Upload all documents before the deadline.
  • The university and academic schools will review the documents, then invite shortlisted applicants for an interview.
  • Complete the interview and receive the result via email.

Pay the admission deposit:

  • Scholarship recipients (Level 1 or 2): pay 3000 RMB (refundable after registration).
  • Level 3 scholarship or self-funded students: pay 50% of the tuition fees in advance.

Receive the Admission Letter and JW202 form.

Complete registration in late August – early September 2026, and obtain the X1 visa.

Second: Master’s Programs for International Students at NPU 2026

Duration of Study

2.5 years - Full-time study -Fall intake only.

After this date, the application form is automatically invalidated.

Admission Requirements

  • Good physical and mental health.
  • Under 30 years old before 1 September 2026.
  • Holder of a bachelor’s degree before 1 September 2026.
  • Minimum GPA of 75%; for CSC applicants, a minimum of 80%.

Language Requirements:

  • Chinese-taught programs: HSK 5 (200+)
  • English-taught programs: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90, Duolingo 120, PTE 60

Nationality Requirements:

Same as the undergraduate nationality rules and residence proof.

Third: PhD Programs

Program Duration and Mode of Study

The PhD program lasts four years, offered full-time only, with fall intake exclusively.

Application Rounds

The application is submitted in four rounds; the system categorizes applications automatically based on submission time:

  • Round 1: 1 November 2025 – 15 January 2026 (17:00 Beijing time)
  • Round 2: 16 January 2026 – 28 February 2026 (17:00)
  • Round 3: 1 March 2026 – 31 March 2026 (17:00)
  • Round 4: 1 April 2026 – 30 April 2026 (17:00)

Any application submitted after 30 April 2026 is considered a withdrawal.

Admission Requirements

  • Good physical and mental health, with no infectious diseases or conditions affecting study.
  • Applicant must be under 35 years old by 1 September 2026.
  • Master’s degree obtained by 1 September 2026.
  • Strong academic ability, GPA not less than 75%, and for CSC applicants 80%. Additional evidence such as GRE or GMAT may be submitted.

Language Requirements:

  • Chinese-taught: HSK5 (200+)
  • English-taught: IELTS 6.5 (min 5.5 in each component), or TOEFL 90, Duolingo 120, PTE 60
    Language certificate is not required for native speakers of Chinese/English depending on the program language.

Nationality Requirements:

Applicant must not hold Chinese nationality, with special documentation for former Chinese citizens or those with Chinese parents, according to required proof.

  • All documents must be in Chinese or English, or officially translated:
  • Passport valid at least until 31 December 2026.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates.
    For graduates from China: both graduation and degree certificates.
  • Transcripts for every semester.

  • Language certificate (if not exempt).

Important Notes on Documents

Some schools require higher GPA (e.g., School of Management: 80%+).

All documents undergo electronic verification, then physical verification upon arrival.

Applicants are advised not to change their passport after applying to avoid visa document issues.

Application & Selection Procedures

Step 1 – Preparing Documents

Ensure all requirements are met and gather all required materials accurately.

Step 2 – Online Registration & Psychological Evaluation

Access the application portal: admission.nwpu.edu.cn
Fill in information and upload documents.
Pay the 600 RMB (90 USD) application fee.
Use an active email address throughout the process.

Step 3 – Document Review

Admission office reviews document validity.
Schools review academic competence within 3 days after each deadline.
Applicants are contacted via email for missing documents or updates.
Failure to respond results in withdrawal of the application.

Step 4 – Interview / Test

Interviews are conducted 7–10 days after each round closes.
Details are sent to the applicant’s email.
Results are issued one week after the interview.

Step 5 – Initial Fee Payment

Provisionally accepted applicants pay 3000 RMB as a registration deposit, refundable after on-site registration.

Step 6 – Issuing Admission Documents

  • applicant will receive electronic copies of the Admission Letter and JW202 via email.
    These are used to apply for the X1 student visa.

Step 7 – Registration

Online registration: early August.
On-campus registration: late August – early September 2026.
Required upon arrival: all original documents, medical exam, certificates, passport, language certificates, official forms, etc.
Failure to provide originals or inconsistencies with uploaded documents leads to cancellation of admission.
