TheSir James McNeill Postgraduate Scholarship (SJMN)is funded by a private trust, established in memory of the late Sir James McNeill, who had a long-standing association with Monash University. This prestigious scholarship is dedicated to supporting postgraduate research students conducting research that is environmentally responsible and socially beneficial.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible Nationalities:
The scholarship is open to applicants from the following categories:
- Australian citizens
- New Zealand citizens
- Australian permanent residents
- Australian humanitarian visa holders
- International students
Academic Criteria:
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Submit a scholarship application in the same year the scholarship is offered (2025).
- Undertake research that isenvironmentally responsibleandsocially beneficial.
- Meet Monash University's competitive scholarship selection requirements.
- Meet the university's English language proficiency requirements.
Note: The scholarship is also available to students undertaking Joint Research Awards, where Monash University is the home institution.

- Application deadline:31 October 2025
- Funding provided:Fully funded, valued at AUD 52,352 per year, it will cover:
- Living allowance (monthly stipend)
- Research allowance
- Relocation allowance (if eligible)
- Eligible research faculties:
- Faculty of Arts (School of Music only)
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
- Faculty of Science
Selection Criteria
Applicants will be assessed based on:
- Outstanding academic record
- Any prior research outputs
- Previous research experience
The RTP (Research Training Program) scholarship terms and conditions apply, except where modified by the specific eligibility criteria for this scholarship.
How to Apply
For New Applicants:
- You must first obtain aninvitation to applyfrom the relevant faculty at Monash University before starting your application.
- Apply for the scholarshipas part of your application for admissionto a postgraduate research degree.
- Asingle applicationis used for both admission and scholarship consideration. There is no need to specify the name of the scholarship, as eligible applicants will automatically be considered for all available postgraduate research scholarships.
