The British Academy announces the opening of applications for the 2025 International Writing Workshops Program, which aims to support early-career researchers from developing countries by enabling them to develop their academic publishing skills and enhance their participation in prestigious journals in the fields of the humanities and social sciences.

Program Objectives

The Writing Workshops Program aims to:

  • Enable researchers in developing countries to publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Build long-term research and professional networks.
  • Enhance the research and writing skills of emerging scholars.
  • Provide tangible support to increase the impact of research emerging from the Global South.
  • Address disparities in academic publishing between researchers in the Global North and South.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The lead applicant must hold a PhD or have equivalent research experience.
  • The lead must be affiliated with a research or academic institution in the UK or one of the eligible countries.
  • If the lead applicant is based in the UK, the project must include a co-applicant from one of the eligible countries, and vice versa.
  • All projects must comply with the Official Development Assistance (ODA) criteria, meaning the primary objective must be directly relevant to addressing issues faced by developing countries.

Funding Details

The funding covers the following costs:

  • Travel and accommodation expenses.
  • Administrative and clerical assistance.
  • Workshop-related consumables.
  • Childcare costs for participants.
  • Networking, meeting, and seminar activities.
  • Support for non-UK-based co-applicants directly involved in organizing the workshop locally.

  • Applications must be submitted via the British Academy’s electronic Flexi-Grant® Grant Management System.
  • Applicants must carefully review the application instructions provided in the Scheme Notes.
  • Incomplete or non-compliant applications will not be considered.

Additional Notes

The workshops are designed to create long-term impact on academic culture and improve the quality of scholarly publishing in developing countries.

Projects do not have to be hosted exclusively at a UK institution—they may be implemented in one of the eligible listed countries.
