The Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University is offered to writers and artists of exceptional talent, with the aim of supporting them in carrying out independent projects during the academic year. This fellowship is designed to provide “studious leisure,” allowing fellows to focus on producing new and important creative work away from teaching obligations.
Fellowship Details
- Duration: 10 months (one academic year).
- Funding Amount: USD 93,000 + USD 5,000 to cover research expenses.
- Location: Princeton University, United States.
- Residency: On-campus housing is not required, but fellows must reside in the United States for the entire duration of the fellowship.
- Teaching: No teaching obligations.
- Facilities: Fellows are granted access to shared spaces on campus.
Who Can Apply?
- Writers and artists, including composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, writers, translators, and other creatives or humanists.
- No advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) is required.
- Applicants of all nationalities are eligible; U.S. citizenship is not required.
- No age limit.
- Applicants must demonstrate significant accomplishments in their field (such as publishing a first book or equivalent artistic achievements).
- The fellowship cannot be used to fund work leading to an academic degree (such as MFA or Ph.D.).
- Previous recipients of the Princeton Arts Fellowship are not eligible.
- Fellows may not hold teaching positions at other institutions during the fellowship period.
Required Documents
Applicants must prepare and upload the following documents through the online application system (AHIRE):
- Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- Project Proposal (500 words) outlining the project the candidate intends to undertake during the fellowship.
- Work Samples (depending on the field):
- Creative Writing:
- Prose: up to 3,000 words.
- Poetry: up to 20 pages.
- If applying as both prose writer and poet: up to 2,000 words prose + 10 pages poetry.
- Prose: up to 3,000 words.
- Dance (Choreography): 1–3 video links totaling at least 15 minutes (rehearsals, research, or performances). Must be continuous footage.
- Music: 1–2 scores and/or links to performances (10 minutes). Video optional.
- Theater: Up to 15 pages of script + 10 design images (photos or renderings) and/or video/audio reel.
- Visual Arts: Up to 20 still images or 10 minutes of video, or a mix of 10 images + 5 minutes video.
- Creative Writing:
- Short Statement (150 words) explaining how the work samples relate to the artistic/research proposal.
- Contact information for three referees (references will not typically be contacted).
Note: All materials must be submitted in a single PDF (up to 10MB). External links from platforms such as Google Drive or Vimeo may be included, with passwords provided if necessary.

After Applying
- All applicants will be notified of their application status by the end of November 2025.
- Final results will be announced during the Spring 2026 academic semester.
- Applicants who are not selected may reapply in future cycles, but the selection committee does not provide feedback on declined applications
