MEXT Scholarship Requirements

General Conditions:

  • Must be from a country with diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • Born on or after April 2, 1990.
  • Willingness to learn Japanese language.
  • Submission of a health certificate proving physical and mental fitness.
  • Able to travel to Japan in April or October of 2025.
  • Submission of a student visa application through the Japanese embassy in the applicant's country.

English Language Proficiency:

  • IELTS: 6
  • TOEFL iBT: 79
  • CEFR B2

For Japanese Studies: JLPT N2

For Bachelor's Degree Application:

  • High school GPA of 90% or equivalent.
  • If in the final year of high school, a GPA of 90% in the second year is required.
  • Passing a specified test at the embassy.
  • If in the final year of high school, graduation must occur by March 2025.
  • For STEM schools, a minimum GPA of 85% is required.

For Master's Degree Application:

  • Completion of 16 years of education outside Japan.
  • Completion of undergraduate studies for 3 years or more, or equivalent.
  • Academic GPA of 75% or 3 GPA.
  • Age under 35.

For Doctorate Degree Application:

  • Holding a master's degree from a university outside Japan.
  • Holding a bachelor's degree and working in the research field at a university or research center for two years or more.

  • Passport photo.
  • Copy of passport. If unavailable, send a copy of the birth certificate.
