About Matsumae International Foundation:

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) was established in 1979 with the aim of attracting highly qualified researchers and helping them develop their research skills, thus strengthening the bridges of cooperation between Japan and other countries. As global threats increase, the Foundation seeks to promote cultural and scientific understanding, as essential conditions for maintaining world peace and preventing future disasters.

The fully-funded MIF Research Fellowship covers all basic expenses that may hinder your research trip abroad. During your stay in Japan, you will learn about the culture and traditions that have helped make Japan a peaceful nation after the devastation of World War II. Therefore, Japan is dedicated to providing scientific and technical knowledge to young people to help them solve the problems of their societies.

Fellowship Details:

Host Country: Japan
Host Institutions: Japanese Universities, National Research Institutions, or Private Institutions
Funding Body: Matsumae International Foundation (MIF)
Fellowship Duration: Six months between June 2026 and March 2027
Number of Participants: Up to 15 Fellows
Research Areas: Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

Fellowship Benefits:

Monthly stipend of 220,000 JPY to cover living and research expenses.
Arrival allowance of 120,000 JPY.
Round-trip economy class air ticket.

Eligibility Criteria:

All non-Japanese nationalities are eligible to apply.
Applicants must have a PhD degree.
Applicants must be under 49 years old.
A letter of invitation from a Japanese research institution must be obtained.
Proficiency in English or Japanese.
Applicants must have no previous experience working or living in Japan.
Applicants must be employed in their home country with a commitment to return after the fellowship and contribute to the development of their home country.
Applicants in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, and medicine are preferred.
