Eligibility Criteria for the President’s PhD Scholarships:

  • Applications are accepted from talented candidates from Imperial College London, UK, and around the world. There are no nationality restrictions.
  • Applicants must be among the top graduates in their undergraduate cohort and must have a UK bachelor's degree with honors or its equivalent, or be expected to achieve it.
  • Applicants with a separate master's degree must have achieved a distinction, or if they have not yet achieved this, they must be able to provide evidence of high performance that could lead to a distinction. They must also hold a UK bachelor's degree with honors or its equivalent (integrated master's degrees that are part of a bachelor's degree, such as MEng, MSci, M.Math, are assessed as a bachelor's degree when determining eligibility).
  • Applicants with multiple separate master’s degrees must have achieved a distinction in the most relevant degree to their PhD study.
  • Applicants with degrees from external institutions are strongly advised to check whether their qualifications meet the relevant eligibility criteria.
  • Before applying, candidates must contact a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London to agree on supervising their research project.

Required Documents for the President’s PhD Scholarships:

    Proof of exceptional or distinction grades in previous studies is required.

How to Apply for the President’s PhD Scholarships:

Before Applying:

  • You must have contacted a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London and obtained their agreement to supervise your research project.
  • Supervisors are allowed to supervise only one student at a time. Please check the "Unavailable Supervisors for President’s PhD Scholarships" page for more information.

Application Process:

  • There is no specific application form for the scholarship.
  • You must submit your application for admission to study at Imperial College through the college’s online admissions system. Your department will nominate you for the scholarship based on academic merit and potential.
  • Scholarship-specific instructions for the admission process are outlined below; you must also meet any additional requirements set by your chosen department.

Additional Admission Instructions:

  • For the 2025–26 academic year, the earliest start date for the scholarship is August 1, 2025, and the latest is November 1, 2025.

  • When requested to provide a personal statement, it should include a two-page document:

    1. Page One: A personal statement (motivations for applying to Imperial and the scholarship, and any other supporting information not included elsewhere on the form that you feel would enhance your application).
    2. Page Two: A research proposal. You may submit updated versions of this statement if necessary after submitting your application if your department identifies you as a scholarship candidate. Writing in the first person is encouraged.
  • When asked for the names of two academic referees, these individuals should be able to provide an academic reference supporting your application (e.g., your personal supervisor or thesis supervisor). The proposed PhD supervisor should not be included.

Funding Choice:

  • To be considered for the President’s PhD Scholarships program, you must select this option in the "Funding" section of the "Additional Questions" tab within the online application form.
 

Review and Selection of Applicants:

 

There are 50 scholarships available. Applications will be reviewed through a two-stage process:

Departmental Review:

  • Applications that meet or are expected to meet the eligibility criteria will be reviewed by the department to which the applicant has applied.
  • Departments will create a shortlist of applicants to be forwarded to the College Selection Committee.

College Selection Committee Decision:

  • The final scholarship decision will be made by the College Selection Committee, which consists of the Vice President (Research), the Director of the Graduate School, and the College’s Deans of Research.
  • Imperial College recognizes excellence across all its faculties and thus allows for some offers at the college level:
    • College Allocation Stage: The committee will assess and rank the shortlisted applicants from the departments and make preliminary offers to the most promising candidates. Deans present these offers to the College Selection Committee with justifications.
    • College Selection Committee: The committee may make additional offers from specific allocations for applicants who meet the expansion goals or other strategic objectives.

Evaluation Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated by the departments and the College Selection Committee according to the following criteria:

  • Research Potential: Demonstrated by:

    • The applicant's research experience to date
    • Interest in discovery

    • Departmental statement, which also reflects performance in the interview

Successful applicants will receive written confirmation of their scholarship. Any offer of a place in the PhD program will be conditional on the applicant achieving the expected qualifications.

Applicants who are not selected for the scholarship will automatically be considered for the standard PhD program.
