The Young Leaders Fellowship 2023 is aiming to provide opportunities for African youth in Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Engagement while integrating youth and women into key development areas. This partnership seeks to nurture a new generation of young African women leaders and experts, enabling them to contribute to Africa's progress by designing and implementing development programs within the context of the SDGs and Agenda 2063. The Young Leaders Fellowship 2023 will explore various development areas falling under the six strategic impact categories of UNDP's Renewed Strategic Offer in Africa, including Natural Resource Governance, Youth and Women's Employment and Empowerment, Structural Economic Transformation, Sustainable Energy, Climate Change, and Peace and Security.

The Young Leaders Fellowship 2023 is seeking up to 40 talented young African women to join its third cohort for a 12-month fellowship. As an Young Leaders Fellowship 2023 Fellow, you will be assigned to a UNDP office and participate in a learning and development program. The journey will require adaptability and agility as you leverage your skills and potential within the assigned environment. Applicants should be willing to accept placements in either the UNDP headquarters, Country, or Regional office, with no placements in hardship locations. The fellowship assignment cannot be extended beyond the 12-month period.

Duration: 12 months

Nationalities: Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Egyptian, Sudanese, and other African countries.

Benefits:

  • The program will cover travel and medical insurance expenses for the fellow alone (no provisions for dependents/family).
  • Each fellow will receive a monthly stipend to cover accommodation and basic living costs at their designated duty station.
  • Paid leave and a dedicated learning budget will be allocated to support relevant learning and development activities.

Supervision: As participants of the Young Leaders Fellowship 2023, fellows will receive support and guidance through the following modalities:

  • A joint structured induction program organized by UNDP and AUC.
  • Structured guidance from their supervisor.
  • Coaching and mentoring from experienced UNDP People Managers.
  • Creation of a work plan with well-defined key results and deliverables.
  • Ongoing supervision through knowledge sharing and performance feedback during the assignment.
  • Participation in unit/team/office meetings for integration and operational effectiveness.
  • Career advice and guidance regarding learning and growth opportunities within their area of expertise.

eligibility criteria:

Education:

Candidates must have completed a Master's degree or its equivalent in fields such as Economics, Political Science, Business Administration, International Relations/Development, Law, Communications, Digitalization, or other related development fields.

Experience:

Applicants should have a maximum cumulative of two years of relevant and paid work experience (post bachelor's/postmaster degree) in research, analysis, and program/project development, implementation, and management.

Language Requirements:

advanced level in English is required. Proficiency in at least one additional AU working language (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish) is advantageous.

Additional Criteria:

  • Only female candidates will be considered.
  • Applicants must be nationals of an African Union member state.
  • The maximum age at the time of application is 30.
  • Availability to dedicate 12 months for a fellowship assignment in 2023/2024.
  • Willingness to participate in an induction workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in early 2024 (timing to be confirmed, with all costs covered).
  • Readiness to relocate to the duty station and work outside the country of residence on an assignment that utilizes their skills and potential.
  • Interest in poverty eradication, sustainable structural transformation, the SDGs, and Agenda 2063.
